ETCs pose problems for aviation
Transcript of keynote
speech by Donald Burfitt-Dons continued
ETCs also pose quite a challenge for aircraft landing in crosswinds.
The limits are approximately 30 kts gusting 35 kts crosswind limit.

On the screen is the synoptic chart for ETC Emma. Core
pressure 957.
The video clip here shows how close this A3200 came
to disaster as Emma thundered through Hamburg Airport 1st March this
year. The crosswind at the time was gusting from 35kts to 55kts according
to the Metar at the airport .
A spokesman for the organization German Flight Safety,
Axel Raab, said that the attempted landing was "more dramatic than
any incident he could recall in German domestic aviation history".
As pilots we generally divert if a cyclone is approaching our destination
airport but with ETCs visiting us regularly now in busy Europe and with
the sky high cost of fuel putting pressure on crews to minimise their
uplifts the option of diversion is not always available. Continued...Donald
